Geboren op de grens van Den Haag en Scheveningen was hij al van jongs af aan gefascineerd door de zee. Woonden daar mensen? Hij was onder de indruk van de krachten en de uitgestrektheid van de zee.
Deze jongeman deed het goed op school, studeerde af in de wis- en natuurkunde en promoveerde aan Harvard University. Zijn carrière maakte hij bij Philips Telecommunicatie en aan de TU Delft.
In de jaren 90, als hoogleraar werkend aan 4e generatie mobiele telecommunicatie besefte hij dat op dit gebied de ontwikkelingen veel sneller gingen dan de behoeften van de mensheid. Wat dat betreft kon hij wel met pensioen. Maar tegelijkertijd lopen we steeds verder achter op het gebied van een duurzaam gebruik van onze planeet aarde: toekomstige generaties kunnen waarschijnlijk nauwelijks in hun basisbehoeften (voedsel en onderdak) worden voorzien.
Zo ontwikkelde zich het idee dat de zee (of voormalige zeeën en deltagebieden) een steeds belangrijkere rol zou moeten spelen om in de toekomst ook 9 miljard mensen te herbergen. Dit idee heet Ecoboot. De ondertitel is: drijvend naar een duurzame toekomst. De bijbehorende website werd gelanceerd in het jaar 2000, bij de vroege pensionering van deze man. Hij en zijn ‘bootsmannen’ willen bevorderen dat we beseffen dat aan de andere kant van de kustlijn een overvloed is aan: 1. ruimte, 2. energie en 3. water. Een steeds groter deel van de mensheid woont in metropolen, en het merendeel van de metropolen ligt in kust- en deltagebieden. En juist in deze metropolen wordt de schaarste aan ruimte, energie en water het sterkst gevoeld (en vaak duur betaald).
Zou de druk vanuit deze metropolen niet tot gevolg hebben dat een deel van de mensheid op zee (denk ook aan de voormalige Zuiderzee en ander water bij zoals voormalige havens) gaat wonen? Hier zijn nieuwe kansen om op een duurzame wijze voedsel te verbouwen, om hernieuwbare energie te winnen, en zelfs water. Het is een ideaal dat steeds meer mensen aanspreekt. Zo levert Ecoboot een bijdrage aan een grote ontwikkeling naar een meer duurzame aarde, of beter, een meer duurzame planeet (70% uit wateroppervlak). Waar steeds meer mensen op water, en ook op (voormalige) zee zullen wonen.
